Easter in the Computer Lab (Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd Grade)

I have written a series of posts describing the computer class activities I did this year for Easter. As a Catholic school teacher, I enjoy incorporating faith-based topics to teach new technology skills.

This post will focus on the activities I did in my Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade classes - Easter themed games, videos, and word processing.

Kindergarten
At this point in the year, my kindergarten students have just begun to read independently in their regular class and can recognize all letters and many words. I try to give them many computer activities in the second half of the year to reinforce word recognition. But they do plenty of "just for fun" computer games as well to practice mouse control and let them be creative on the computer.

Most of the games/activities I use for the younger grades come from Abcya.com. Kindergarten did these three Easter games:
Since their computer activities presented only secular Easter traditions (bunnies, eggs, etc.), I also showed a short kid-friendly video about Jesus's death and resurrection ("The Easter Story" by Kids Bible).

1st Grade
The 1st graders have been using Microsoft Word since January and have become more comfortable with typing words, spaces, and punctuation. In previous assignments they also learned about the "enter" key, using backspace/delete to fix mistakes, changing text font and color, and adding clip art. The sentences they typed were prewritten by me, but this the most writing they've done so far for one assignment. They wrote five sentences about the true meaning of Easter and added clip art images by searching in "Easter," "cross," or "Jesus" in Word's clip art finder. See some student work below (click to view larger):

2nd Grade
The 2nd graders also created a Microsoft Word document about Easter, but having more advanced typing and language skills, they wrote the sentences themselves. The wrote acrostic poems with the word EASTER (where you write a sentence/phrase starting with each letter of the word). Each sentence had to be about the purpose and celebration of Easter in some way, with at least two sentences about Jesus. They also got to be creative with fonts, colors, page borders, and pictures. The kids came up with some really creative poems! (Click pictures below to view larger.)
(I created the document template with table and heading and saved a copy on each computer. The students just had to fill out their own sentences on the table.)

More posts to come with Easter projects for 3rd and 4th grade, 5th and 6th grade, and 7th and 8th grade.
