Easter in the Computer Lab- 5th-8th Grade

These are my Easter computer projects for 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. All four grades did similar projects on the Easter Story, following the same list of events in the instructions, but with two different tools. 5th and 6th grade created presentations using Prezi, a fancier presentation tool than a simple slide show. 7th and 8th grade created short videos using WeVideo, a free online video editing software (similar to iMovie). These students were given the choice between an Easter Story event sequence I created or the Stations of the Cross (same as 4th grade). See instruction documents below for the sequence.

All website links, instructions, and other documents were shared with students through Google Classroom and students learned to generate a "shareable" link to their projects and turned them in through Google Classroom also. I taught my 5th-8th grade students about the importance of copyright awareness and proper citation this year and they applied this knowledge in their projects. Students were required to use copyright-free images only and used a website called Creative Commons Search to filter copyrighted images from Google Images. They cited all images also on a separate Google Doc, turned in with the project link.

The image collection process for both Prezi and WeVideo was long and painstaking. Students had to search for an image of a certain story event, copy it's link, and paste on Google Doc as a citation. Then they had to download the image onto the computer's hard drive, then upload it into Prezi or WeVideo. And this process was repeated for 12-15 images!! The projects took a long time but students were very proud of their work in the end. (See instructions for more detail on the picture saving process.)

**Note: Project samples in this post are ones I made myself as a model for the students. For privacy reasons with student names, I could not post student work of these projects. Both Prezi and WeVideo reveal the account holder's name in the project link.**

5th and 6th Grade- Prezi
In 5th and 6th grade, students start branching out from the Google programs to create work using various other interesting design tools on the web. Prezi is a creative presentation tool with lots of interesting templates to choose from. Student presentations included a title, introduction frame, and 12-15 story frames (one per story event). Each story frame included text for the event title and a picture of the event. Students learned how to arrange frames in Prezi so they formed a nice visual sequence when zoomed out and events presented in the correct order when zoomed in.

7th and 8th Grade- WeVideo
Students in these grades learned video editing skills, a much more advanced form of presentation. Their videos included alternating text and image frames to tell each event of the story, with transitions in between each frame (fading, flipping, dissolving motions, etc.). Students were also required to animate at least 5 images, adding visual effects to make the image move in some way (zoom in or out, move from top to bottom or one side to side). They also selected an audio track from WeVideo's menu to accompany their video and had to adjust the length of frames to fit the music timing.
